Getting Started with TWAIN Direct!
TWAIN Direct specifies:
- a communication protocol
- a scanner language
- an image file format
The protocols discover and connect to scanners. TWAIN Direct communicates with scanners using tasks, and describing metadata. The image file format is a new, robust industry standard based on established technology. The specification leverages 25 years of industry experience to avoid version incompatibility.
Native and Sidecar TWAIN Direct scanners are driverless. They require no scanner software on the user’s desktop or mobile computers. TWAIN Bridge provides support for legacy TWAIN scanners, which do require software to be installed.
The best document to start with is the TWAIN Direct Specification – User’s Guide. It provides a roadmap for developing TWAIN Direct applications.
The reference guides are used in concert with sample code and TWAIN Direct tasks to create solutions. The certification tests validate that solutions are designed to the specification.
